So this time last year, we were probably giving it “2020 is going to be my year” and talking about a new year, new me…

This year, it feels like people are a little more hesitant as we head into 2021, but I think there’s never been a better time to go after what you really want out of life, whether that’s personal or professional!

The most popular resolutions are these;

  1. Get a new job
  2. Spend more time with your family and friends
  3. Get fit
  4. Lose weight
  5. Quit smoking
  6. Have more fun
  7. Drink less
  8. Get out of debt
  9. Learn a new skill
  10. Get more organised.

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut, life, responsibilities all start to get in the way of what we promised ourselves we’d do in the new year. 43% of people who make resolutions fail within the first month and I think the main reason is that we get to the 1st January, decided we should probably do something, pick something out of thin air that we might quite like to change about ourselves and then try to do it!

There’s no planning, no strategy, no thought as to how we are going to succeed and so we lose our way.

The truth is, a new year is as good a time as any to make a change, but you just need to give it some thought. If you’ve decided that next year you’re going to get fit, don’t just join a gym, go every day for 2 weeks and then find yourself in pain and bored of going.

It’s the same with a change in a career, when the clock strikes midnight on the 31st December, don’t just e-mail your resignation to your boss and then think you can figure it out from there! Plan!

A change of job or even career might be the right thing for you, but you need to give it some thought.

If you like your career choice, but not the place you work, then put a plan into action as to where you’d like to work. Be realistic, if a long journey or relocating isn’t an option then don’t pick companies a long distance from where you live.

Update your CV, most people don’t bother to do this, unless they have to, but if you’re serious about getting another job, then invest the time to update yours. it’s worth producing a couple of different versions, some of your skills will be more relevant to some positions than others.

If it’s a total change you’re after, then spend some time looking at the skills you have compared to what you need. If you’re not sure what your dream job really entails, then try and speak to someone who does it. Some careers seem glamourous, but the reality is very different! It’s always worth finding out the reality before you completely retrain!

If you do need to add to your skillset, then think how you can make this work with your everyday life. Can you study alongside your current job? Maybe do an online course an evening course at the local college.
